Well-known Native American architect killed when hit by car

PHOENIX - A well-known Native American architect and artist in the Valley was killed when he was hit by a car.

Dennis Numkena was 68 years old. He designed award-winning buildings in Arizona and in Nevada. Numkena’s artwork is in private and corporate collections all over the world.

According to police, Numkena died after he was hit by a car on Sunday night in the area of 7th Street and Portland near Interstate 10.   

All indications are that his death was an accident. Police say the driver stopped and called for help after he hit Numkena.

A private funeral service will take place for Numkena in his home village on the Hopi Indian Reservation.
