Nogales teen sentenced in shooting deathPosted: Updated:
NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) -- A Nogales teenager has been sentenced to one year in prison for the shooting death of a Nogales High School student last July.
Seventeen-year-old Raul Garcia could have received two and a-half years in prison as part of his negligent homicide plea agreement.
Santa Cruz County Judge Kimberly Corsaro opted to give Garcia the minimum sentence because of a lack of past criminal behavior, his age and his lack of maturity.
The Nogales International reports 16-year-old Sofia Palma, a pom pom girl and drama student, was killed at a party. Garcia had previously said that he believed the gun he had was unloaded when he pointed it at her head and pulled the trigger.
