PHOENIX – A Phoenix man is behind bars after allegedly killing three kittens and that is just one of the accusations.
Victoria Shover says Sunday started out normally. She and her boyfriend even talked about going on a picnic. Shover changed her mind about it and then he came after her.
She tells 3TV, “I panicked. I was scared.”
Shover says she was more afraid for her animals than herself after her boyfriend of four years, Richard Routin, broke in. She explains, “He forced his way in the back door, he broke the window. “
Shover told police the 25-year-old suspect was drunk and "held her down by her arms" and assaulted her. She was able to "break free from him and ran outside," hiding in a corner until he left.
After that Shover says she went back inside and found no sign of her three kittens. She says, “I was looking for them everywhere. We even searched the alleys and everything to see if we could find them.”
Police found Routin a short time later without the animals. He admitted to officials "he had killed them" and dumped them in separate trash cans.
Shover says this is not the first time Routin has harmed her animals. According to the Department of Corrections, Routin has served several months in prison in 2005 for theft and possession of burglary tools. He is now charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, burglary, theft, and three counts of animal cruelty.
