Massive pallet fire under investigationPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Investigators are trying to determine what sparked a massive pallet fire at an industrial building in southwest Phoenix Wednesday evening.
Wind gusts of up to 40 mph made the situation especially difficult for the 80 to 100 or so firefighters who were called out to the scene at near 43rd Avenue and Broadway Road. It took them more than two hours to get the flames under control.
The two-alarm fire started at about 6 p.m. in stacks of wooden pallets that were around the building that houses the Hernandez Pallet Company.
There are no homes in that area so that was not a concern. There are, however, several businesses nearby. Fire crews were able to keep the blaze from spreading to those businesses.
There was some concern initially about chemicals that might have seeped into the wood possibly producing toxic smoke as the pallets burned, but that turned out not to be an issue.
Aerial video of the site Thursday morning showed the scorched, sooty mess left behind by the huge fire.
No injuries were reported.
