Lawsuit filed by county so judge can void sheriff's purchase of $450K busPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County filed a lawsuit Tuesday asking a judge to void the Sheriff's Office's purchase of a $456,000 bus that was supposed to transport jail inmates but hasn't been used because of a dispute over whether the transaction was legal.
County officials say they wouldn't let the bus get titled and insured because the project wasn't put out for competitive bidding.
The sheriff's office defends the purchase, saying only Sheriff Joe Arpaio has the power to spend the special jail funds used to buy the bus and that his office followed the rules on buying equipment.
Tuesday's lawsuit was filed against the company that sold the bus, Motor Coach Industries of Schaumburg, Ill.
A call to the company wasn't immediately returned Tuesday afternoon.
