GOODYEAR – A 20-year-old man is behind bars after officers found over $300,000 worth of methamphetamine in the car he was traveling in.

A Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol officer conducted a traffic stop on a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu sedan just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The driver was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 and was pulled over for an alleged traffic violation.

The officer reportedly received consent to search the car and a DPS narcotics K9 officer sniffed the exterior of the car and alerted to the vehicle.

During a more extensive search the officer discovered 17 pounds of meth hidden behind the front bumper. The estimated street value of the drugs is approximately $323,000.

The driver, identified as Jose Martinez Perez, of San Diego, was taken into custody and booked into the Maricopa County Jail. He faces charges of possession and transportation of dangerous drugs for sale.

The car and the meth were seized.
