School music programs in troublePosted: Updated:
In the Sunnyside School District, music programs could be on the chopping block with state budget cuts looming.
Tuesday night dozens of parents and students packed the Sunnyside school board meeting. They pleaded to the governing board not to cut fifth grade band and orchestra, Calling the programs essential to students' academic and personal success. Sunnyside faces a $20M budget cut if the one cent statewide sales tax is shot down by voters in May. But board members did issue some words of reassurance.
That sacrifice would potentially come in the form of staff reductions, salary cuts and furloughs. Board members will decide on which cuts to make by mid-April.
