Gilbert city council lifts ban on home bible studies...for nowPosted: Updated:
GILBERT – The Town of Gilbert is planning to do away with a ban on home bible studies.
The city has received emails from all over the world after the town issued a cease and desist order to the Oasis of Truth church, which was holding small meetings in the homes of church members.
The controversy is over a part of the zoning code meant to keep traffic down in neighborhoods. It reads: "Religious assembly uses are not permitted in single family residential structures."
Town council members say that when they heard about how it was being enforced, they quickly asked town officials to hold off until permanent changes to the code could be made.
Those are expected to come in a council meeting on March 23.
