Aggravated assault suspect shot by police during pursuit identifiedPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - A suspect who was shot by an officer during a foot pursuit has been identified.
The shooting happened on Wednesday at around 10 p.m. near Baseline Road and 48th Street.
Police say the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Carlos Jose Lopez, was armed and dangerous. He was wanted for an alleged aggravated assault earlier yesterday.
Officers traced him back to an apartment complex when Sgt. Seth Jahnke came around the corner and found himself face-to-face with the suspect, startling him and that is when investigators say Sgt. Jahnke discharged his gun.
“When the sergeant confronted the individual, the individual had his hands down around his waist,” Sgt. Tommy Thompson said. “In his waistband he had a 40 caliber glock pistol, which we believe is the gun that was used in the original aggravated assault when he pistol whipped that individual.”
Lopez was hit in the shoulder and remains in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Jahnke is on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident.
