A company promised one of its customers a refund but did it follow through?

PHOENIX -- A Valley company promised one of its customers a refund, but did it follow through on the promise?

The refund is for several thousand dollars. It all has to do with the purchase of some hearing aids that had a trial offer.

“I feel very well," Donald Ecott said. "I think that Channel 3 has done a wonderful thing for me.”

Ecott, 79, says he's thrilled now, but that wasn't the case when 3 On Your Side first spoke to him a week ago.

Ecott said his problem started when he went to ABC Hearing Aid Services in Mesa and inquired about getting fitted for hearing aids.

"I said, 'How much will it be?' and she said, 'Thirty-nine hundred and ninety dollars,'" Ecott said. "It was kind of a shock to me. I didn't realize it was going to be that much money."

But Ecott took the plunge and paid because the contract stated he had a 30-day trial period and if he didn't like them he could return them. All he'd have to pay was $500 for trying them out and if he didn't like them, he'd get the rest of the $4,000 left.

Ecott claims when he tried to return the hearing aids within the trial period, he had problems getting his money back.

He said no," Ecott said. "I said, 'What do you mean no? I've got 30 days. It has only been a little over three weeks.' He said, 'No this is at the discretion of me. They are working.' I said, 'My friend, they are not working.'"

Well, Ecott left his hearing aids right there in the office and eventually contacted 3 On Your Side. The owner of ABC Hearing Aids said they have attempted to mail Ecott a refund check several times before, but that Ecott refuses to accept it from the post office and sends it back.

Ecott says he thought the parcel of mail was his hearing aids he didn't want. He didn't know the company was sending him a check.

In the end, though, 3 On Your Side finally got Ecott his refund.

“I think that we just had the interview with Channel 3 a week ago today and this thing got resolved because of Channel 3," he said. "I'm very happy.”

ABC Hearing Aid Services didn't do anything wrong here and I should mention they have an "A minus" rating with the Better Business Bureau. 3 On Your Side is just glad Ecott opened up that piece of mail.
