Couple arrested, accused of scamming umpiresPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- A Payson couple are under arrest, accused of defrauding umpires who work Little League games.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday the arrests of 45-year-old William Werner and his wife, 40-year-old Bonnie Huffman, the owners of Arizona Desert Umpire.
The couple is accused of fraud after being contracted to provide umpires and failing to follow through with payment to the umpires themselves.
Arizona Desert Umpire was allegedly paid over $36,000 to provide the umpires for the games and still owes 35 umpires over $25,000. Victims range from high school students to retirees.
The Sheriff's Office said the investigation so far has shown that over $53,000 has been deposited into business accounts and a majority of that money has been used for personal expenditures.
