PHOENIX -- Investigators believe a driver who fell asleep at the wheel is responsible for touching off a series of chain-reaction wrecks that involved five vehicles Wednesday morning.

It happened at about 8 a.m. at 36th Street and Union Hills Drive in North Phoenix.

According to police, the driver of a pickup truck pulling a trailer dozed off at the wheel and clipped another truck. That truck then spun around and slammed head-on into two more vehicles. Police said a total of five vehicles were involved.

Rescue crews had to extricate at least one person from one of those vehicles.

At least three people were taken to the hospital, including a 32-year-old man who reportedly suffered severe injuries. That man was taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital. The extent of other people's injuries was not immediately available.

Metal and debris were scattered all over Union Hills Drive.

While the westbound lanes of Union Hills Drive were opened to traffic within an hour, the eastbound lanes were still closed nearly two hours later.

An investigation is under way.
