DOUGLAS – Border agents busted over 50 pounds of pot being smuggled into the United States through a sewer system by a suspect wearing scuba gear.

Agents assigned to the Douglas Station’s Bike Patrol observed several individuals illegally crossing the border fence into the U.S. using infrared cameras. One of them appeared to be carrying two bundles.

When officers reached the area, all of the individuals returned to Mexico except one. As agents approached a sewer exit, they saw someone wearing a wet suit wading through waist-high water with the bundles. That person fled upon seeing border agents and left behind a scuba tank and a mask.

The contraband was also left behind by the group. Agents confiscated 55 pounds of marijuana valued at about $44,000.
