Felon arrested after taking hostage in PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- A felon wanted for probation violations allegedly fled police and took a man hostage in his own Phoenix apartment before being arrested.
Authorities say 30-year-old Ruben Valdez was riding with Victor Hernandez when the Phoenix Police Department's gang squad pulled over the vehicle Thursday afternoon.
The 24-year-old Hernandez was wanted for questioning about a homicide and was taken into custody, but police say Valdez ran into an apartment complex with a gun in his hand. He allegedly entered a stranger's apartment at gunpoint and barricaded himself in the bathroom. Police took the tenant outside and authorities negotiated Valdez's surrender.
Police say Valdez faces charges of felony probation violation involving weapons and possessing a handgun despite being prohibited from doing so.
