PHOENIX – A Phoenix woman has entered a guilty plea to stealing thousands of dollars from her father’s Veterans benefit funds.
Peggy Sue Salazar, 48, pleaded guilty on Thursday to theft of government funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). She admitted to taking $14,963 of her father’s VA compensation and pension benefits between July 2007 and July 2008.
Salazar acted as a fiduciary and legal custodian for her father, who is a World War II veteran, throughout that time frame. She admitted to gambling with most of the money at a local casino and not using the funds to care for her father.
If convicted, Salazar faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both. She will be sentenced on May 17.
