Mesa district to offer free, full-day kindergartenPosted: Updated:
MESA (AP) -- The Mesa Unified School District plans to offer free full-day kindergarten next school year regardless of the state's budget decisions.
After hearing budget proposals from district administrators this week, the five-member governing board directed the district Thursday to prepare to make full-day kindergarten available.
Gov. Jan Brewer's budget proposal announced in January included cutting state funding for full-day kindergarten for the 2010-11 fiscal year. Lawmakers would still need to approve the measure.
District officials say Mesa will lose $16.6 million in funding if the state goes forward with Brewer's plan. But the board and administration believe full-day kindergarten, only offered in all public Arizona schools for the past few years, leads to academic success.
