Carter pleaded guilty in September to attempted receipt of child pornography. Carter knowingly received child pornography in the United States mail. At sentencing, it was made public that Carter had been communicating online with minors.

On the same day, Marc William Lowe, 29, of Phoenix, was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by lifetime supervised release. Lowe pleaded guilty in September to transportation of child pornography. In the plea agreement, Lowe acknowledged sending graphic child pornographic video over the Internet.
