PHOENIX – A criminal complaint was filed against a man who was hiding his dead niece in a bedroom in his home.

County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced on Monday that a criminal complaint had been filed against Leonard Orta Jr., 47, for the death of 5-year-old Kaiya, his niece.

Thomas says, “We appreciate the efforts of Phoenix police in making this arrest and our office will work to make certain this case is properly prosecuted.”

The probable cause statement filed by police indicates officers arrived at Orta’s home on February 17 after a report about a family fight. When officers entered the apartment they found Kaiya’s body in a bedroom.

Orta had been the girl’s caregiver since July of last year. He now faces first-degree murder, child abuse and abandonment and concealment of a dead body.
