2 Motorcyclists killed in crash on Carefree HighwayPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Two people died after they were thrown from their motorcycles in a crash on the Carefree Highway late Thursday afternoon.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a Harley-Davidson and a Honda motorcycle were traveling eastbound on State Route 74 (Carefree Highway) near Lake Pleasant at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Witnesses reported that the motorcyclists took evasive action to avoid a westbound car that was completing a pass in the eastbound lanes.
DPS Lt. Stephen Harrison said the Harley-Davidson struck the rear of the other motorcycle and both riders were thrown from their bikes.
Both bikers, who were wearing their helmets at the time of the crash, died at the scene.
The Harley-Davidson driver has been identified as Allyn A. Hansen, 65, of Dolliver, Iowa. The Honda motorcycle rider was identified as Steven A. Tangeman, 62, of Phoenix.
