CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) -- Casa Grande police say an officer shot and killed a burglary suspect Thursday morning.

City of Casa Grande Public Information Officer David Bridger said police responded to a burglary call at 12:30 a.m. after a homeowner reported a broken window and witnessed a man walking away carrying a bat or a stick.

An officer later found a man carrying a large sledgehammer. Bridger said the officer told the armed man to put the sledgehammer down several times.

Bridger said the armed man failed to obey commands and charged the officer and that's when police shot the man twice.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bridger said the investigation was turned over to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The name of the dead man has not been released.

The officer was not injured.
