Ariz. legislation would lengthen divorce wait timePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -- It'd take longer to get divorced in Arizona under a law advancing through the Legislature.
Identical bills approved by House and Senate committees would triple to 180-days the state's current 60-day period that courts must wait before considering a divorce request.
Supporters told a Senate committee Wednesday that a longer waiting period would ensure that couples have time to try to reconcile and that it's in society's interest for the state to try to strengthen marriage.
A psychologist said a longer waiting period could impose dangerous stresses on couples who have already firmly decided to get divorced.
