Frank Lloyd Wright archive auctioned

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A large archive of Frank Lloyd Wright-related material has been purchased at a Los Angeles auction by the foundation created to preserve the architect's legacy.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, Ariz., paid $48,800 for the collection of photographs, correspondence and select building plans at Bonhams & Butterfields Los Angeles auction on Sunday.

It had been estimated to sell for $20,000 to $30,000.

The material was assembled for "In the Nature of Materials," a 1942 treatise co-authored by Wright and Henry Russell Hitchcock. It contains photos of Wright buildings that no longer exist, including his home and the demolished Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

The foundation called it a "priceless asset" that will complement its vast archive to help convey Wright's world view."
