TEMPE -- Tempe police arrested a man they say shoplifted beer from Circle K convenience stores on 39 separate occasions.

Police say Charles Atkins, 42, stole more than $4,600 worth of beer from Circle K stores in Tempe and Phoenix between June 24 and Jan. 30.

Twenty-one of the thefts occurred at stores in Tempe and 18 occurred in Phoenix.

Police say Atkins would walk into the convenience store, remove 18 or 30 packs of Budweiser or Bud Light from displays and exit the store without paying. There were no threats or acts of violence in any of the incidents.

Investigators say Atkins admitted he traded the beer for drugs.

Atkins' crimes were caught on tape and he was also identified by witnesses in photo lineups.

Atkins was already in jail on an unrelated charge when police tracked him down. He's now facing charges of shoplifting, theft and trafficking in stolen property.
