Host Bob Lee interviews Don Luria, board member, Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, Elva Flores, founding board member, El Central de Cultural de las Americas, and Roberto Bedoya, Executive Director, Tucson Pima Arts Council.

Community Foundation for Southern Arizona works with charitably minded people and organizations to strengthen our southern Arizona communities.  El Centro Cultural de las Americas is an organization founded on the premise that Tucson's Hispanic heritage is too valuable to lose and needs to be preserved.  The Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) is the designated local arts agency for the City of Tucson and Pima County.

Luria says the Foundation recently was awarded a 67-thousand dollar grant from the Ford Foundation to help ethnic minority artists become economically successful.  He says through the grant, the Foundation is addressing the disparity between how communities value art and how they value artists.

Flores says a large number of local artists are living at the poverty level and are lacking support systems.  She says El Centro Cultural will conduct community outreach and needs assessment, and artist summits and showcases to create new market opportunities.

Bedoya says this is a capacity-building grant that will increase the effectiveness and business development of local arts organizations and the artists they serve through collaborations, resource sharing and professional development.
