Boy dies after family is hit by truck in middle of streetPosted: Updated:
GLENDALE -- A 5-year-old child died after he and her family were hit by a pickup truck in Glendale Tuesday night.
According to the Glendale Police Department, two women and four children were standing in the two-way left turn lane on 67th Avenue just north of Bethany Home Road when they were hit by a pickup truck.
Police spokeswoman Officer Karen Gerardo said the 55-year-old driver, Marla McKitrick, became distracted when her cell phone rang and momentarily took both hands off the steering wheel to manipulate the phone, which was on a lanyard around her neck.
The children's mother, Julia Vasquez, 23, was transported to a local hospital where she was treated and released. Her 21-year-old sister, Claudia Garcia, was treated and released at the scene.
5-year-old Alexis Vega-Vasquez, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead after being transported to a trauma hospital.
Vasquez's three other children, ages 4, 2 and 6 months, are in critical condition with possible life-threatening injuries.
Police say it is unknown at this time whether impairment was a factor in this accident and the investigation is ongoing.
