3-Year-old still critical after shooting himself

PHOENIX (AP) -- A 3-year-old boy who shot himself in the head remained in extremely critical but stable condition on Monday.

Pinal County sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Tamatha Villar says the boy found a pistol under a couch at his grandmother's San Tan Valley home on Saturday. The bullet went through his brain on one side, and there is hope he might survive.

The grandmother lives alone in a rural area and had retrieved the gun Friday night after her dogs began barking and she became scared. She put it under the couch and went to sleep, and forgot it was there when her grandson arrived the next morning.

Villar says the Pinal County Attorney will review the case but no charges are pending.

The unidentified boy is unconscious after extensive surgery at a Phoenix hospital but responding to stimuli.
