DPS: Bus driver involved in crash had canceled licensePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX - Police allege that the driver of the bus involved in Wednesday's collision with a motorized scooter should not have been driving the bus at all.
DPS officers say they sent a certified letter on April 15 to Maria Olaiz, the bus driver, telling her that her bus driver certification had been canceled. According to police, Olaiz had too many traffic violations -- nine points in all.
DPS investigators say they also faxed the letter to the school where Olaiz worked, Liberty Traditional Charter. But according to Pan-American Charter School, the school involved in the accident, Olaiz was no longer working at Liberty Traditional Charter. Pan-American Charter School had hired Olaiz two months ago, and they say that while she had showed them her proper certificate, she never told them it had been suspended.
Now police say they are not only investigating the accident, but also why a woman with invalid credentials was driving a bus full of children.
