School bus hits man riding motorized scooter in PhoenixPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A man riding a motorized wheelchair was critically injured when he was hit by a school bus Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the 40-year-old man was trying to cross the intersection of 31st Avenue and Indian School Road when he was hit by a bus from Pan-American Charter School.
There were 48 students on the bus, but they were not injured. The children, ages 7 to 12, were taken off the bus and walked back to the school, which is located at 20th Avenue and Indian School Road.
Police say the bus driver was trying to make a left-hand turn when she hit the man on the motorized wheelchair as he tried to cross the street. He was not in a crosswalk.
The man, identified as John Scott, was rushed to a local hospital. His family says Scott suffered head trauma and bruising. They report that he is in a coma and on a ventilator.
The bus driver was shaken but not hurt. The incident remains under investigation.
