Suspects in Gilbert officer's death booked; additional charges likelyPosted: Updated:
GILBERT -- The two men suspected in the shooting death of a Gilbert police officer have been booked into the Maricopa County Jail hospital.
Lt. Eric Shuhandler was shot to death in a shopping center parking lot at Val Vista Drive and Baseline Road during a traffic stop Thursday night.
The suspects then led police officers on a high-speed pursuit that came to an end near Superior. The suspects jumped out of their truck and fired at officers and deputies on the ground. Those officers and deputies returned fire and the suspects were injured.
Christopher Redondo, of Globe, has been booked on charges of first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.
The initial charges against Daimen Irizarry, of Gilbert, include aggravated assault and felony flight.
Gilbert police Sgt. Mark Marino said these charges relate to the fatal shooting of Shuhandler and the shots taken at an officer at Higley and Baseline roads.
Marino said additional charges are likely to be filed by other agencies that are conducting their own investigations.
