PHOENIX -- Police have identified the man who was killed when what began as an attempted traffic stop ended with a car wreck in Phoenix early Monday morning.

It all started at about 12:30 a.m. at 55th Avenue and McDowell Road. Officer watched as a man and a woman in a 2008 two-door Hyundai got out of the car in the middle of the street and change seats. Believing that to be suspicious, the officers tried to pull the car over. The male, who was behind the wheel at that point, did initially stop. As the officer was walking up to the car, however, the driver took off, speeding west on McDowell Road.

The officers followed, but quickly turned off their lights, backed off and requested air support.

The helicopter team spotted the Hyundai heading east on Interstate 10 at 59th Avenue and followed as it got off the freeway at 27th Avenue.

According to Det. James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department, the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Berry Williams, drove south to Buckeye Road, where he ran a red light. He then turned east on 19th Avenue. When the suspect hit Baseline Road, police said he blew through another red light, plowing into a Honda that was heading east.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after the collision. Once paramedics arrived, the male driver of the Honda, who has been identified as Abel Abebe, was pronounced dead. The 27-year-old was alone in the car, which was so damaged, firefighters had to cut him out.

Both suspects, Berry and a 30-year-old woman, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken the hospital. Berry was booked into jail when doctors released him from the hospital.

Holmes said police believe the suspects had stolen beer from a Circle K store just prior to the attempted traffic stop a little west of where officers originally saw the suspects.

"The officers went back to that convenience store and went through surveillance video," Holmes said. "They did see that it was in fact the suspect that had committed that beer run."

In addition, officers at the wreck scene found indications that lead them to believe alcohol was a factor in the deadly collision.

The investigation is ongoing. Police hope to use images from photo enforcement cameras as part of that investigation.
