Host Bob Lee interviews Ed Dunin-Wasowicz, Media Consultant, Pima County Prevention Coalition, Paul Lovelis, Youth Advisor, and Mari Mariscal, Forum Content Coordinator, BeFreePima Youth Website Advisory Committee.
BeFreePima.com is a youth substance abuse prevention website project of the Coalition.
Wasowicz says the YWAC is comprised of youth who manage, gather and create underage drinking and other substance abuse prevention messages for the BeFreePima.com website. He says a recent “Arizona Youth Survey” conducted in schools revealed that students indicated the first use of alcohol by Pima County youth occurs at age 12. He says the survey also found that 30-percent of 8th graders in Pima County tired alcohol in the last 30 days.
Lovelis says any person in Pima County between the ages of 12 and 25 years of can join the Coalition's Youth Website Advisory Committee in order to contribute ideas for features and content for BeFreePima.com. He says the objective is to actively promote the reduction of underage drinking and other substance abuse in schools, neighborhoods and homes.
Mariscal says because the web site is youth-developed and youth-driven, it promotes peer-to-peer, positive influence among young people. She says youth use information on the web site to reduce alcohol and drug use among their peers. Underage drinking prevention videos produced by teens will appear on the web site as well, she adds.
