Neighbors complain about pigeon population at woman's homePosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- A Phoenix neighborhood is under siege by pigeons and frustrated homeowners turned to 3 On Your Side for help.
We're not talking about a few pigeons but on some occasions hundreds of them and they all seem to hang around one particular home. Neighbors say there's a reason for that and they can't seem to do anything about it.
The house sits just off of 30th Avenue and Cactus Road and the pigeons feel pretty much at home there, but the neighbors want the pigeons gone.
"Depending on which way the wind is blowing, feathers pile up on this side of the yard," Ed Pearlman said.
"It's very unhealthy and it certainly doesn't help the property values," Larry Spann said.
But what makes this home so popular with pigeons anyway?
We went to speak to the homeowner and were greeted with an overwhelming stench that neighbors say is from the large amount of pigeon droppings caked on and near the property.
Nancy Sedore, 67, says she likes pigeons and acknowledges she used to feed and water them every day. Neighbors say that's exactly what created the pigeon population to begin with.
Neighbors complained and city inspectors told her last year to stop. She says she did, kind of.
She said she doesn't feed the pigeons but does have water around.
In fact, in her backyard there's a kiddie pool Sedore says is for her dogs, but we found pigeons.
Sedore doesn't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to neighbor complaints about the smell and the damage neighbors say the birds leave behind.
Sedore says city inspectors never mentioned an odor problem and as far as she's concerned, she's in compliance.
As for neighbors, they say this pigeon problem is definitely for the birds.
"I don't know how to describe the smell, but it's nasty," Pearlman said.
The city as well as the county say Sedore is in compliance as far as they can tell and that's why they closed their case file last month.
However, they will reopen their investigation if they get more complaints from neighbors.
