Human skeletal remains and clothing were found by a student on his or her way to school who contacted police on Wednesday at about 11:30 a.m.

Detectives believe the remains were buried in a shallow grave and were washed out with the recent rain storms.

The student found the bones in the desert in an area near Estrella Parkway and Dry Creek Road. At first it was unclear if the remains were human or not.

Investigators are gathering evidence that will be sent to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office for testing.
