PHOENIX -- A Valley man is facing a manslaughter charge after police say he hit and killed a child who was crossing the street and then left the scene.
It happened at about 5:30 Wednesday evening.
According to investigators, the victim -- an 8-year-old boy whose name has not been released -- was crossing 27th Avenue just north of Glenrosa Avenue with his step-father and two siblings.
Southbound traffic had stopped to let the family cross safely. Police said that's when Juan Miguel Aguirre served around the stopped vehicles and hit the boy.
The 8-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
According to investigators, Aguirre, 33, ditched his Chevy pickup truck and ran away from the scene. Officers caught up with him a short distance away and took him into custody without further incident.
Police believe Aguirre was drunk at the time of the wreck. Officer Luis Samudio of the Phoenix Police Department said Aguirre was taken to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office jail and booked for manslaughter.
