PHOENIX -- State Rep. Chris Deschene is hoping to unseat Secretary of State Ken Bennett.
Deschene is a Democrat in his first term at the Legislature. He announced his candidacy Tuesday at the State Capitol.
Bennett is a Prescott Republican and former Senate president. Gov. Jan Brewer appointed him Secretary of State when she left the job to become governor a year ago.
Deschene faces former state real-estate commissioner Sam Wercinski in the Democratic primary.
Deschene is Navajo and represents the Navajo Nation, Flagstaff and much of northeastern Arizona at the Legislature.
He says he is running because he has seen a failure of leadership at all levels of state government.
