PHOENIX -- Brittany Williams, who is accused of leaving her newborn baby in a trash bin, was indicted by a grand jury on second-degree murder and child abuse charges.
PHOENIX -- Phoenix police have arrested a 24-year-old woman who they say dumped her newborn in a trash bin after hiding her pregnancy from her family.
The infant was discovered Monday not far from the woman's home near 20th Avenue and Broadway Road. The family of the mother -- identified at Brittany Williams -- tried to revive the baby and take the child to the hospital after learning about the birth.
They flagged down a motorcycle officers who called paramedics. The Phoenix Fire Department pronounced the child dead a short time later.
Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department said homicide investigators believe Williams' baby was born alive and that Williams knew it.
Williams reportedly gave birth at about 2 a.m. Monday. Investigators believe that she spent some time with the baby and then later that morning, walked down the street to a vacant home and placed the infant in a Dumpster.
Police arrested Williams Thursday morning and booked her into the Maricopa County Jail on charges of homicide and child abuse.
