Lt. Jose Pena, SCC Animal Care & Control, says Santa Cruz County has been under a rabies quarantine due to the record number of cases recorded in 2009. He says a rabies quarantine was implemented Dec. 2, 2009, to last 60 days.  He says it requires all pet owners to have their cats and dogs vaccinated against rabies.  Pena says any dogs on the loose can be picked up and could ultimately be destroyed.
