Motorcyclist, off duty paramedic dies when hit by truck near Casa GrandePosted: Updated:
FLORENCE - The following is a press release from the Pinal County Sheriff's Office:
On Friday January 8th, 2009 at approximately 8:00 am, Mike Vernick, 32, of Casa Grande, was killed when a Chevrolet pick-up, driven by Alejandro Statler, 19, also of Casa Grande collided with his motorcycle.
Investigators report that Mike Vernick, a Southwest Ambulance Paramedic, was traveling Northbound on Overfield Rd. just north of Randolph Rd. when a Chevrolet pick-up, driven by Alejandro Statler, crossed the center line into Vernick’s lane of travel colliding with the motorcyclist head on. Vernick was pronounced deceased at the scene. Statler and a youth passenger sustained minor injuries, both refused medical treatment.
Drug and/or alcohol involvement have not been ruled out at this time. The investigation is active and scientific examination of evidence is currently ongoing.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of Mike Vernick during this very tragic time,” commented Sheriff Paul Babeu.
Several vigils have been held and a memorial has been erected at the scene of the collision. The Sheriff’s Office reminds travelers to be mindful of mourners and pay extra attention when traveling in the area.
