MESA – An alleged bank robber is behind bars in Mesa.

Police say the suspect armed with a handgun robbed a Compass bank at around 3 p.m. on Thursday then tried to make a run for it in a stolen truck.

Police officers responded to the 500 block of N. Stapley Road a short time later where SWAT teams cleared homes in the area and officers scoured the area.

It did not take long before police caught up to him.

The suspect, identified as Eli Von Johnson, ended up in handcuffs in the back of a patrol car and is facing a long list of charges.
