Mesa police try to ID suspects in shooting of dad, 2 kidsPosted: Updated:
MESA -- The Mesa Police Department is asking for the public's help to identify two suspects in a triple shooting Dec. 21.
Pavel Lopez-Barraza, 35, died at the hospital and his two children, a 15-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son, were wounded after being shot at the Kay Bee Villa mobile home park in the 100 block of East McKellips Road. The mother was in their trailer but she was not injured.
Police say the daughter was placing a dress in a vehicle in their driveway and saw two Hispanic males wearing hooded sweatshirts walk past her in the trailer park. As she walked back to her trailer, she saw the suspects running toward her.
Detective Michael Melendez said the teen was screaming for her father to help her as she tried to enter the trailer.
After the girl got inside, her parents barricaded the door with their bodies to prevent the suspects from entering.
Melendez said one suspect was able to keep the door from being completely closed and witnesses said the two suspects began yelling for the family to open the door. They didn't and several shots were fired through the door, striking the three family members.
A bright red pickup truck was seen leaving the complex next door. The witness reported hearing shots then immediately seeing a Hispanic male jumping into the passenger side. The truck traveled in reverse and exited the complex to the east exit.
The motive for the shootings is still unknown.
One suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s, between 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall and 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a white stripe around the hood, blue jeans and black shoes.
The second suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his early 20s, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with red on the sleeves, blue jeans and black work boots.
