TEMPE -- A Department of Public Safety officer sustained a serious hand injury while conducting a bus inspection in Tempe Tuesday morning.
According to DPS spokesman Officer Robert Bailey, while the commercial vehicle officer was inspecting the engine compartment at the rear of the bus, the driver started the engine.
Bailey said Officer Herbert F. Groll Jr. suffered a partial separation to the upper part of his left thumb and upper left middle finger and multiple crushing fractures to his left ring and pinky fingers.
Groll, who is right-handed, was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn where he is expected to have surgery Tuesday evening to reattach and repair the injuries.
