Phoenix PD out to stop random gunfire on New YearsPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Firing a gun into the air to ring in the new year is against the law. Phoenix police plan a special enforcement Thursday night, made up of 130 officers, to track down anyone firing guns in violation of Shannon's Law.
Officers plan to contact citizens and pass out flyers Thursday night.
For years the Phoenix Police Department has partnered up with Mayor Phil Gordon since he initiated the fight against "celebratory" or "random" gunfire after the death of Shannon Smith.
In 1999, a stray bullet struck and killed the teenager in her backyard.
