Union complaints filed by 5 Fry's workers in ArizonaPosted: Updated:
MESA -- Five employees from four Fry's locations in the Phoenix metropolitan area have filed unfair labor-practices complaints against the grocery company and the United Food and Commercial Workers union.
Arizona Fry's and Safeway stores reached an eleventh-hour settlement with the union last month that prevented a strike. But the five female employees complained to the National Labor Relations Board that Fry's is continuing to deduct union dues from their paychecks even though the workers resigned from the UFCW.
The employees -- two from Apache Junction, two from Queen Creek and one from Mesa -- say they revoked their dues-deduction authorizations at a time in which the UFCW did not have a contract at their workplace.
UFCW Local 99 president Jim McLaughlin says the legal action is baseless and predicts the NLRB will reject the complaints. Fry's officials have declined comment.
