PHOENIX -- An off-duty reserve officer with the Phoenix Police Department shot and killed a shoplifting suspect at a West Phoenix Food City Sunday evening.

It happened at about 7 p.m. at the store near 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

According to police, the officer, who was working security for the store, cited the man after employees reportedly observed him shoplifting. The man left the scene but then returned and allegedly tried to run over the officer.

A few minutes later, the officer spotted the suspect, identified as Faustino Osuna-Tapia, 53, and tried to arrest him for aggravated assault on an officer.

Officer Luis Samudio with the Phoenix Police Department said Osuna-Tapia resisted and a struggle ensued. Osuna-Tapia reportedly pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The officer fired and the suspect was killed.

The retired reserve officer with 30 years on the force suffered a minor cut to his hand in the course of the struggle.
