PHOENIX (AP) — Retired Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor was appointed Wednesday by the state's highest court to oversee investigations and lawsuits by Maricopa County's top prosecutor and sheriff against some of the county's judges and members of its Board of Supervisors.

The high court's current chief justice, Rebecca White Berch, says in an order that McGregor will have the power to appoint judges to hear cases and take other actions to ensure impartial justice.

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has been in a dispute with several county judges and the Board of Supervisor and is prosecuting two members of the board and a judge on criminals charges.
