SRP workers to strike?Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- After weeks of negotiations, thousands of SRP workers and their union are scheduled to meet tonight to look over a contract proposal from the power company.
The potential deal was struck on Dec. 9. As part of the agreement, employees would not get a raise the first year of the contract. They would, however, get a 3 percent raise in November 2010, followed by a 1.5 percent raise in May 2011. Raises for the third year would be negotiated.
On Monday, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers sent out a letter stating, "SRP can adjust to current conditions without reductions on the backs of the employees that have made the company strong and reliable reliable."
SRP calls its offer "reasonable, equitable and fair."
If workers reject the proposal, they could start discussing plans to strike.
SRP says no matter what happens, customers' power needs will be met without interruption.
