Pima County saves with inmate labor

Posted: Updated:

With all the budget cuts affecting county government, they're now using inmates to pick up the slack.

Model inmates who have a trade skill are able to volunteer to do work around the jail.

They take the place of, for example, a painting contractor the county would have hired.

The inmates hope the volunteered work they do bodes well for them when it comes time to be sentenced.

Corrections officials are happy with how the program is going.
