Phoenix police shoot, kill suspect in attempted murder

PHOENIX -- Phoenix police shot and killed and a man suspected of attempted murder who opened fired on them when they tried to arrest him.
It happened Sunday night near 51st and Glenrosa avenues.
A task force of U.S. Marshals, Mesa police and Tempe officers tried to take the suspect, Troy Lake, into custody.
Lake, 24, was wanted for an attempted homicide in Prescott earlier this week. The fugitive task force was able to track him to a Phoenix neighborhood.
According to police, Lake, mostly recently of Chino Valley, took off when Marshals and officers approached him. Then he pulled a gun.
"As they entered the dark alley, the officers were fired upon by the suspect," said Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department. "The officers from, we believe, at least three agencies, returned fire, striking the subject. The suspect died at a local hospital as a result of these injuries."
No officers were injured in the shootout.
Lt. Clayton Heath of the Prescott Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.
