Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale to pay out millions in bonuses despite debtPosted: Updated:
PHOENIX -- Despite being millions of dollars in debt, at least three Valley cities -- Phoenix, Mesa and Glendale -- will pay out millions in bonuses.
At the beginning of the year, the city of Phoenix projected a $260 million deficit and has reportedly laid off more than 1,000 people. One city employee told 3TV more layoffs are expected this spring.
Still, the city is slated to pay out more than $14 million in bonuses. Mesa will pay $4 million and Glendale will pay $300,000.
One city employee said retention bonuses are not actual bonuses because many people are not getting yearly raises. Paying employees for years of service is one way to reward those workers.
