Corona del Sol ready to repeat at state champs

TEMPE - Corona del Sol ended Mesa's reign as 5A DI champ last year.

Even with a new head coach they are not missing a step. Everyone is focused on having a repeat performance this year.

Corona del Sol has their sights set on another state title.

Behind state champs and senior captains Derek Felton and Ryan Miller the Aztecs are full of returning talent.

Despite returning Derek and Ryan along with state champ Mike Howard and four other state placers the Aztecs new head coach Jim Martinez knows the title isn't a lock.

Other perennial powers Mesa, Highland and Mesquite will be in the 5A DI hunt.

From his years as an Olympic wrestler Coach Martinez has knows that he must instill in his players that letting up won't land Corona del Sol another state title.

Other teams to watch include 5A DII Tuscon schools Ironwood Ridge and Sunnyside. 4A DI contenders include Moon Valley and Vail Cienega. In 4A DII it looks as if Mingus Union will be the team to beat. Safford will be seeking its seventh straight 3A title and St. Johns and Benson are the top 1A and 2A teams on paper.
